momof2boys
Someone metioned in a previous thread that in the 3rd edition of the WTM IEW is not a recomened resource. I was wondering, for those of you that have had a chance to look at the newest edition at a convention and or hear SWB speak , could tell me what she does recommend now? I am looking at what to get for my 9th grader and would like to know what her recommendations are before I purchase. Thanks, Gloria P.S. I know that she has always recommended Writing Strands and we have tried this program several times and it is just a no go here for us. :001_smile:

ladydusk
I think IEW is written about in the chapter (and the earlier chapters) but not in the list at the end of the high school chapter. Someone asked about it on her blog, in this post. My two friends and I are in the second row middle of the first picture of people ... just had to tell somebody [grin]
Leanna Tomlinson
I heard SWB at the convention in Cincy this weekend. From what I gathered, she doesn't really recommend any writing program as a first choice. Her first suggestion is just a weekly plan for writing. Here's the plan for High School: 1. Study of Rhetoric 2-3 hours per week. Your student will be working on the art of persuasion. She listed 4 different books for this, but I can't read my own handwriting.:tongue_smilie: The first one is A Rulebook for Arguments by Weston. The last two were only recommended for 11th-12th grades. 2. Write two 1-page persuasive papers per week from history, literature, and/or science. Use a thesis statement. Thesis statements should be propositions that you can defend, statements you can prove or disprove, or an assertion supported by evidence. 3. Write 2 longer papers per year. These are informational rather than persuasive. The goal here is to find and use sources and learn proper documentation. Make this an opportunity for the student to explore a topic of interest. 9th grade 4-6 pages 10th grade 5-10 pages 11th & 12th - 12-15 pages She also suggested finding an outside source to evaluate some examples of your student's writing. This will help you to know whether you and your student are on the right track. SWB specifically mentioned IEW in her talk. She does not like many of the stylistic techniques taught by IEW. Many IEW students end up sounding the same. Some of the "dress-ups" lead to inferior writing. She did suggest IEW's Classical Rhetoric as an alternative for studying Rhetoric. This was not her first choice and she advised ignoring the style elements of the program. She also suggested Memoria Press Classical Rhetoric with Aristotle as an alternative. She did say that this resource is more focused on speech and debate and less on writing. HTH, Leanna
