violin69
SL, Winter's Promise... have readers that are history based. Are there any reader packages out there that aren't history based? It just seems to be history overload to me. Anyone else feel this way? Any ideas?

Lori D.
These are all 2nd-4th grade reader level; some are the older "stepped readers" -- but my boys found those to be very interesting in that reader stage. I know this isn't a curriculum or program -- but maybe you really don't *need* a reading program at this point?? Just enjoy loads of good books aloud together, and solo reading at or a little below their level, and discuss, follow "bunny trails", or just enjoy reading! Hope something here is of help. Warmest regards, Lori D. Lori D.
We used the Ginn Basic Reader series by David Russell (and Doris Gates, et.al.) as a wonderful supplement up through 5th-6th grade, as they give you exposure to retellings of classic stories; classic poetry; plus original short stories, plays, etc. I see these available online for for $5-$15/each (plus shipping) at: Amazon used books; E-bay; online vintage bookshops such as Abe's, Powells, and Albris; and through small online dealers by google searches on the titles. For an idea of what these look like, scroll down on this website: http://www.juliascollectibles.com/ginn.htm Each reader is usually about 350 pages, and contains a wonderful collection of retellings of classics; classic poetry; legends/myths/fairytales; stories about children in other cultures; along with a few "hokey" 1950s stories about "modern" children. Each reader has a wonderful glossary in the back with the page # in parenthesis so you can work with vocabulary in the stories; and some of the stories have reading comprehension questions and other expansion/teaching ideas. Each enrichment book contains more reading at that level. Below fourth grade, the enrichment books are more collections of the hokey stories, BUT... fourth grade and up, enrichment books are very similar to the readers. You can also often find the teaching manuals used to give you more ideas for working with the stories as literature! Below is what I've been able to come up with as to how the titles fit into the grades. We used the 4th grade books in 3rd grade, so I think these are very gentle in how they are listed by reading level. BEST of luck in finding what works for your family! Warmest regards, Lori D.
