Janna
I am not an artificial sweetener person at all. But it does seem, on initial glance, having done NO research on this, that Truvia could be a possibility in place of sugar. What do you think? Do you know anything about the plants it says it comes from and the process they say they use to extract the flavor (per the box, it's "steeped like a tea bag")? Thanks! Jean in Newcastle
Is Truvia the same as stevia?
Janna
Um...yes? LOL I have no idea, honestly, because I haven't looked into Stevia either. From what I can tell, yes they must be similar because Rebiana, which is in Truvia, is derived from the Stevia leaf. That's all I know, which is precious little, LOL. Maria/ME
I thought this was interesting.... ...If I'm going to go with a sweetner, I'll stick with organic sugar. If I need a sweetner that is NOT sugar, I'll go with other stuff out there. Agave, molasses, stevia....For me, the jury is out on this one. Mandy
I have used stevia as a sweetner for many years, and though I do not always like the characteristic taste of it, I am hesitant to embrace Truvia at this point. My concern is that it is as far removed from the actual stevia plant as Splenda is from sugar cane.

mktyler
My husband has been a lead developer of Truvia for Cargill. Truvia is all natural, basically they removed the parts of the stevia taste profile that caused the bitter taste (I couldn't use it because of the flavor and it made me feel weird). I'm lucky because we get samples free and I think it is great. Let me repeat: It is all natural in the sense that it is the real flavoring from the stevia plant. They do add some natural fillers to round it out, but I don't know what those are as my husband can't tell me. However, to get the "all natural" label requires a lot of work because it has to be all natural from start to finish in the manufacturing process. My husband worked on this project for last two years!! So it isn't like Splenda at all. It is a manufactured product but so is any sweetener not eaten of the bush! If you have any specific questions about it, post and I'll ask my husband. mom26
I love this stuff!! The Stevia I get from Trader Joe's is almost like powdered sugar and a bit bitter. The Truvia is granulated like sugar and sweeter--no bitterness. I hope they will one day come up with no calorie drinks with this :) kathi
Mandy
Melissa, Thanks for the information. That is good to know. I will take another look. Mandy
mktyler
Coke has produced some flavored waters with it and there are plans to produce a Sprite-like drink and a cola with it. However, they will not be 0 calories as Truvia has some caloric content, just a lot less than sugar.
