mamapjama
I want to do some renovating this summer and I want to add a front entry to our home. But I'm not sure what it is called and I need photos to help explain it to dh. What I want to do is add a small room with lots of glass onto the front of our home just around the door. It will be a mud room of sorts. I need photos for ideas and to see what kind of a roof we would use with our existing roof. But I can't come up with any ideas online because I'm not searching under the right name maybe? Mud room doesn't work because I'm getting interior photos. It's not a porch or a portico because it has walls. Any ideas?
Tutor
Sounds like you'd like a combination mud room/ sun room.
RebeccaC
Try looking for a foyer. If it is a front entrance it is usually called a foyer or at least that is what it is called in my neck of the woods. here is a link to a bunch http://www.myhomeideas.com/myhome/decorating/da/browse/0,29700,homeOnt:Rooms_homeOnt:HallwaysandFoyersClass_homeTax:Foyers____18_TYPE,00.html and http://www.hgtv.com/topics/foyers/index.html Edited February 8, 2009 by RebeccaC
LaxMom
We all had such entries when I was growing up in Maine. I think they're generally referred to as "enclosed porticos", but we called them mud rooms. There are a number of them in this article on Brunswick houses. Maybe they'll give you some ideas? (Oh, I guess it's really only a couple.) ETA: it appears they are referred to as an "outer foyer", but generally found in old apartment buildings (where you would walk through the first set of doors and buzz up to be let through the second) or theaters in cold areas. Interesting. Do other places not have weather, I guess? Edited February 8, 2009 by MyCrazyHouse

Is this the kind of think you're thinking of? http://www.sunporch.com/Content.aspx?pageid=Photo1
Susan in KY
It's very nice, complete with a mosaic that is quite something to look at.
mamapjama
Thanks everyone! #29 on this page http://www.westwinddesign.com/art1d.htm is the closest to what I am imagining. And you are right, I am thinking of something similar to the older homes that have often been turned into apartments or flats. Maybe if I search some of the real estate listings for such homes I might find an example. Thanks for the help!
LaxMom
That's the one I was looking at, too. And then I was searching real estate listings for the area where I grew up (since it seems common) and came up with this that is slightly more recent. LadyR
What about this?
mamapjama
Those are perfect! Thanks so much. I'm envisioning lots of windows with built in benches along a corner for easy snow and rain boot removal and storage. Then my existing entryway can be passable without trying to step over boots and melted snow!
