Clarita
We just got to the lesson for contractions in All About Reading. It's going through contractions really fast. DS6 can read the contractions, but when I ask what the "expanded" version is or what it means he is a bit confused (I guess I don't speak in contractions enough to my kids). How much should I aim for mastery of this or just finish up the lesson? How important are contractions?
Rosie_0801
Comprehension is always important, but contractions are an easy thing to keep working whether the program reminds you to or not.
HomeAgain
We used the story of Apostrophe the Elf for contractions. He's a little character who goes around stealing letters, and the only clue is the fingerprint he leaves in their place. He also possesses things, because he's a bit greedy. His fingerprint tells us that he has taken the book/toy/etc. Making it a mystery, trying to figure out what he stole, helps keeps kids thinking about the missing letters and what the word could be. 2
