ajungquist
I was just introduced to First Language Lessons by another mom at co-op but I don't know where to start my daughter. She is 12, finishing up 6th grade this year, dyslexic, and behind in the language arts. Should we start at level 1 and work our way through? Or does the information review enough in each book that we could start with level 4 and then move on to the next series? And what is the next series after FLL 4? Also, for writing, is Writing with Ease supposed to be done alongside FLL?
HomeAgain
Definitely look at samples here and on Rainbow Resource. Level 1 is very basic. The beautiful thing about grammar is that each year it reviews the previous information and then adds on. I think you would be pleasantly surprised at how fast a 12 year old masters the information compared to a 7 year old. That said, I would also look around at other grammar programs, and I would definitely take her dyslexia into account. The first one that jumped into my mind was Writing Tales, a two year classical writing and grammar program that is gentle and encourages movement. It's also written in Comic Sans, which might be easier on her eyes. But I'd strongly encourage you to look at the Learning Challenges part of the board and see what those who have been there have done. SilverMoon
I would not use levels 1 or 2 with a sixth grader. It will feel very babyish to that age and my kids would seriously balk. They could start at level 3 or 4 though. Those have workbooks and a more mature vibe.
Aloha2U
What other English curricula is your daughter currently using and/or has used for reading (phonograms learned or mostly sight reading?), handwriting (manual or cursive?), and spelling up to this point? Janeway
I am thinking of using Beowulf Grammar with my reluctant 5th grader. You should look at that. It might just be perfect!
