chilliepepper
After a year and a half, my (now) 10th grade son has finally completed Mr. D. Algebra 1. Although most of his quiz/test grades are As and Bs (some after several attempts), I'm skeptical of his mastery of the concepts since he only did the written coursework sporadically and all of the quizzes and tests were multiple choice. Recognizing a correct answer is different from coming up with it on your own. Is there a test I could have him take, to see if he really got it? Maybe just do a Saxon placement test or something? BusyMom5
This may be a better fit on the HS board. I don't know, I do Saxon sitting by my kid everyday bc she needs help. What do you plan to do next year, snd what are your kids goals. If you go to Geometry, be sure to do Algebra review.
chilliepepper
Oh, that's right. When I posted I wasn't sure which board it should go on, since a lot of kids do Algebra 1 in middle school. I'll post it over there too.

I’ve used AoPS placement tests to gauge where my kid is before: https://data.artofproblemsolving.com/course-docs/diagnostics/algebra-a-posttest.pdf

So I think they are relatively informative, although I don’t know that I’d expect a kid to get all of them — rather, I’d want to see what they can and can’t do and go from there.
Paige
I sometimes have my kids take the state assessment practice tests. I think most states have practice tests with answer keys online. I only require something like 80-85% to pass because of variance in curricula. We don't teach to their tests and I often see questions for things that we hadn't covered or vocabulary that we didn't use. On their Algebra test, for example, they included a lot of statistics and probability questions that weren't covered in our book at all and I can't remember exactly what it was- but they had NO questions for some of the things we spent a lot of time on. It was something I thought would have been really basic- like factoring, but I can't remember if that was what it was or not.
