Gil
If so, what is it?
alisha
Plaid Phonics I found was pretty independent. But I've heard great things about Explode the Code and that seems to be independent also.
genny
readingeggs.com. It's an online phonics program. They offer a free trial. I've used it on four of my children successfully.
nixpix5
I found Abeka 1 to be mostly independent. It took me 10 min a day to give the super quick lesson and then there was workbook pages that the child completed independently that were straight forward. Gil
Thanks. I'm a devout believer in teacher-intensive and direct instruction at the elementary level so pretty much the only thing I required my kids do independently at 6 was hold their pencil. So when someone asked me for an independent phonics program for kids, I had no idea what to recommend (aside from actually working directly with said 6yo and taking them line by line through a phonics program)
ElizabethB
Really, that and math you should be teaching at that age. Well, really everything at that age but at a minimum math and phonics. But, if it is self-teaching or nothing, watching all the videos at Sweet Sounds of Reading: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHnIVm9OG9zIdtOtUHAtoUw Also, not a complete program, but Read, Write, Type is good and independent, it is a good supplement. http://www.talkingfingers.com/read-write-type/ Blend Phonics is easy and cheap, you can teach with in in 15 to 20 minutes a day. The child could watch my first 5 or 6 videos of my syllables program on their own and then the parent work with them a bit. No matter what you've got going on, even as a single working parent, you should be able to find a few minutes to do some phonics and math, you can do a lot of it orally if you go simple. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On Reading/syllablesspellsu.html Edited September 19, 2018 by ElizabethB
