shelleysboys
What percentage would you give for class participation for a 9th grade history class? I paid someone to come and talk about that weeks history. Thanks in advance!
EKS
I must be missing something because I don't know what paying someone to come and talk about history has to do with how you grade participation for the entire class. That said, my graduate school classes make discussion participation 15% of the grade. My son's high school classes are about the same. If you're just talking about how to grade the work from a single class period that consisted of participation only, unless the student was completely zoned out or being inappropriate, I'd just give 100%.
shelleysboys
Sorry, yes, I wanted to know what percentage of a grade should go toward class participation - you answered my question: 15%. Thanks!
Farrar
I think you can award whatever you want. For something like listening to a lecture, I wouldn't personally award much, but I also don't do homeschool grades that way. When I was in the classroom, I sometimes gave none or even more than 15%, but only when it was for something more substantial, like participation in a seminar format. I've seen foreign language classes give as much as a third of the grade to participation, and that seems fair.
