Bootsie
IME, the need for a resume in an academic position (once you have already been offered a job) is to meet either state requirements or to have on record for accrediting agencies. So, Some things they may be interested in was having more particulars about your graduate coursework (how many graduate hours and in what particular areas and whether you worked with an faculty members).
Ali in OR
My cover letters talked about my qualifications, recent experience (tutoring, subbing), and my interest in this particular job, how I fit, etc. If I mentioned home schooling at all, it was to comment that I've taught the entire math curriculum from preschool to precalculus which I consider a strength. I don't see a need to be defensive about a gap--it's just different experience, not a waste of time. And my gap between paid jobs was 20 years, not 6!
