Compilations of "Living" Short Stories

I like the above linked book, and also all the Guy's Read books edited by Jon Scieszka. You don't actually need to be male to enjoy them:

There are others though. I'm also not sure what's meant in this case by "living" short stories, though if it's just works published for kids instead of put in textbooks, then the above are a good starting place. I also tend to get my short stories off lists online - older short stories are often in the public domain. For example, this list below has links:
