Literature suggestions 9th grade

Hi, I'm interested in seeing what books others are using for 9th grade-ish reading and/or lit. study.

If  you have a list of what you are using/planning to use, or links to lists, that would be great : )

We are planning on continuing with Build Your Library. They have the list of books on their website under level 9.

So far this year dd has read the Iliad and the Odyssey with one of her co-op classes.  At home she has read Gilgamesh and we did some of the questions in Veritas Press's Omnibus (not sure which number).  Right now she is reading Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and we are using the literature guide by Memoria Press.  This spring she will probably be reading Canterbury Tales and using the Memoria Press literature guide too.

 

I try to tie my literature with what we are doing in history if possible.  This year we are doing ancient through renaissance in history so that has been our focus in literature.

My 9th grader is reading The Aeneid and watching the lectures from Romans Road Media. He's also currently reading A Tale of Two Cities. We just finished Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and will begin A Merchant of Venice in 2018. Last year, Julius Caesar was a big hit.

This year we have completed Illuminating Literature Where Worlds Collide- and have LOVED it.  We completed it in one semester, as we began in June.  We are also going to do BJU Fundamentals of Literature for our second semester (I received all of the BJU free when a Christian school closed).  He is also doing some reading in TGatB level 7 curriculum, but we just see this as a bonus.  I plan to continue with Illuminating Literature next year with the next set of books followed by Elements of Literature by BJU.  So we do one program that focuses on books followed by a program that is a textbook anthology/ him free reading any classics that he desires; this works because he is an avid reader.  I will do one or the other for my children who are not as literature focused.  

 

Why I love Illuminating Literature:

 

I feel that it gives me guidance in discussions/ evaluation of my student throughout the program.  It encourages activities with each book for part of the grading rubric.  It has online quizzing for simple comprehension.  It has vocabulary incorporated with the books. I like the varied book choices.

When my daughter was in 9th grade, it was her third year of homeschooling and her third year of a chronological study of history. 

 

In ninth grade, she studied the time period 1700 to 2000. 

 

Here are the resources (non-fiction, literature, videos and music) that we used.  This combines history and literature.   Be aware that we are fairly liberal so some materials might not suit all families.
