Wendi
The doctor is thinking ds might need to take Abilify. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it. Thanks, Wendi
Ria
No experience with taking it, but do find out if your insurance will cover this medication. I recently sold 60 tablets to a woman without insurance and the cash price was close to $1000. ETA: I work in a pharmacy! Ria
KidsHappen
It is a fairly new medicine and does not have much support as an effective treatment for mood/behavioral disorders at this point. I did do a trial of this med and noticed no effect what-so-ever. I would insist on trying older more established meds first. I can make recommendations based on what the med is being taken for. Please note that I am note a dr. and can only make recommendations based on experience as a patient. You can PM me if you would like. mommylaw
I don't have personal experience with this med but I've heard some very positive things about it. It's similar to Geodon. They are both atypical neuroleptics (anti-psychotics) that are used for mood stabilization. They both have had excellent responses in patients especially to those who have not responded well to other meds. Most mood stabilizing drugs are anti-seizure medications (Depakote, Tegretol, Neurontin, Lamictal, Topomax). It takes several weeks before a patient will notice changes in mood and 4-6 weeks before full therapeutic levels are reached. If your ds does take this medication be sure to watch for adverse effects especially a fever and involuntary movements or a funny feeling in the mouth, face, tongue, arms or legs. Good luck to you and your son. Edited November 5, 2008 by mommylaw
chiguirre
Ds1 takes Abilify combined with Risperdal. Both help with his mood and he hasn't had any side effects with either. Abilify is covered by our BCBS. Good luck!
Pamela H in Texas
My ds took it many years ago (like 5 or so). He did well on it. However, I tried it last year and responded poorly. Sometimes the side effects are pretty rough. Supposedly those are less of an issue than with most meds though. I personally have had a real issue with most anti-psychotics (only one so far that has worked and not been awful otherwise has been geodon).
