mamakelly
I've been asked to teach a class of k/1 kiddos and it needs to be a social studies class. Any suggestions for curriculum? I was thinking maybe an around the world focus? Any other ideas? I've never taught k/1 social studies in a group setting before. Lang Syne Boardie
I would probably use FIAR, one story per class emphasizing the social studies lessons. Story time plus a map and activities would be great for that age group.
Zinnia
FIAR or literature based, FIAR style. A great resource is Galloping the Globe. I taught a co-op class last spring to K-2, and we did a broad theme of geography. We met 8 times, a different country each time. I concentrated on map skills, learning the continents, then talking about each country. We did a book about/from each country, colored it in on a map (same one all semester), then an activity. My class was rowdy boys, so we did a lot of outside games for our activities (variations of tag for that country most often). Turned out to be a fun class.
MyLife
I was going to suggest FIAR, as well.
