Are we supposed to write thankyou's for college interviews?...

Recommended Posts

It seems a little contrived to me, but is it expected? And what do we thank them for? "Taking the time to talk to me" is the best I can come up with. "Thank you for considering me" doesn't sound quite right. He didn't offer any particular advice for which we could thank him. What we really would like to say is thank you for is being nice, encouraging, and unscary, but that won't do. Any ideas? And do we need to do this?

especially because this is the school he really want to go to. I think it's a good idea to write a note to any school if you have a one on one interview with someone in admissions.

Your son can thank the interviewer for his time and for answering your son's questions. I think this note is also a great place for your son to briefly explain why he really likes this school and why he thinks he'd be a good fit there. If he met with faculty or particularly enjoyed some aspect of the campus or its neighborhood, that would be a good thing to mention as well. He could also mention how much his brother is enjoying campus life and how he looks forward to being a part of it next year.

I recently read an article somewhere that said that the hand written thank you note is not very common any more, so if you take the time to send one, it can make you stand out.

LOL - We stand out so much that I almost wish we didn't - I don't think this school has had much experience with homeschoolers (although I might be wrong). And the CC classes, which normally might make him stand out as exceptional, seem to be pretty normal for this place. Good thing we have them. But I'll tell my son to write one. Thank you.

My daughter also sent thank you notes after the interview. Her notes included a thank you for your time and meeting me sentiment. She also followed up, if applicable, on something that she and the interviewer had discussed. For example, with one interviewer she had a great discussion of fantasy novels, so she commented about that and ended with a "hope you'll enjoy that book" remark. She also added something to the effect of "you can expect to see my application in the near future."

Best wishes to your son; it sounded from your other thread as though the interview went well.

Regards,

Kareni
