visitor
What should a 8 year old child learn before Lego Mindstorm? Thanks in advance Edited April 13, 2017 by visitor
Arcadia
An 8 year old could just jump right in to Lego Mindstorm and learn along the way. There is no prerequisites. Scratch which is free is useful for learning drag and drop programming if you just want familiarization with that style of programming which is what the Mindstorm software use https://scratch.mit.edu You could also download and install the Mindstorm software and let your son play with it https://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/downloads/download-software
Plink
My boy transitioned between regular bricks and Mindstorm with Lego Technic. They teach basic physics. After the kids begin to understand how gears work with basic sets you can add motors and other power functions.

Arcadia
Thanks all , Pink which Lego Technic can you recommand me ? I see lot of different kinds .... To save money, I would recommend seeing if you have a local lego users group/club because that was where we bought cheaper used lego technic parts from. Yard sales/flea market are another good area to look at because people would sell incomplete sets cheap and you can make use of the parts. If you don't mind spending more, this set is what I would start with and it complements the Mindstorm set. https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/simple-powered-machines-set/9686 This set which complements the Mindstorm is very well used by my boys, even more than the Mindstorm itself. https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/lego-mindstorms-education-ev3-expansion-set/45560
Lisa in the UP of MI
In addition to sets, I would also recommend Lego Technic idea books. We own a few and have borrowed most of the others from the library. Oldest ds's favorites: Incredible Lego Technic: Cars, Trucks, Robots & More and The Lego Power Functions Idea Book Volumes 1 & 2. Some of the sets that we bought had motors, switches, etc. and we bought some separately as well. The technic pieces and power functions are used with Mindstorms.
