Stuck on math problem

Recommended Posts

I wish I could take a picture but it is a table with occupations listed on the left and the increase in Number of Jobs(in thousands) from 2000-2012 on the right column

Security guards 2x-51

Home health aides (3/2)x+ 3

Computer systems analysts x

Then it says total. 780 thousand

The directions say to find the actual increase in number of jobs for each occupation.

We have added all three together for 2x-51+(3/2)x+3+x=780,000

Solving for X gives us 173,343.778. The answer for x (or the computer job) in the back is 184 thousand.

It seems like a simple problem and we have checked our math many times which leads me to believe we are doing it wrong and just don't understand it.

Thanks for any help!
