Something for Americans to Think About Before Voting

I found this quote interesting:

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

You cannot further the brotherhood of men by encouraging class hatred.

You cannot help the poor by discouraging the rich.

You cannot establish sound security by spending more than you earn.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves."

These words were written in 1916 by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian clergyman and pamphlet writer.

Have a great day,

I'm going to do some research to see who really said this. Thanks for the quote and citation. It will help.

here is what Wiki has to say on the subject:

"An outspoken political conservative, Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots. Originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln. The error apparently stems from a leaflet printed in 1942 by a conservative political organization called the Committee for Constitutional Government. The leaflet bore the title "Lincoln on Limitations" and contained some genuine Lincoln quotations on one side and the "Ten Cannots" on the other, with the attributions juxtaposed."

All the weird highlights belong to Wiki

The quote you cited has been misattributed to Lincoln because a number of quotes from Lincoln and Boetcker appeared in the same pamphlet. Here are some interesting ones from Lincoln, however, that today's voter should also take under consideration:

That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built.

  • Reply to New York Workingmen's Democratic Republican Association (21 March 1864)

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? — Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! — All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Have a good day. And thanks for the food for thought.
