Maus Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 My mother-in-law wants to help her new Cambodian sister-in-law learn to read and write English. She speaks enough to get by, but doesn't really know the English alphabet. Any suggestions where to start? Quote
DawnM Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 (edited) I am leaving the house in a few min. and don't have time at the moment to adequately answer this question, but here is a bit. Is the SIL proficient in Cambodian? Can she read and write proficiently in her native language? Is she at least a high school graduate? I am assuming the answer is yes, but it does make a different in terms of the program needed. Here are a few worksheets to get started: http://www.elcivics.com/worksheets/esl-worksheets.html The LDS used to have a full adult ESL program online with lessons and worksheets, etc....but I can't find it at the moment and don t' have the time to look for now. Maybe someone else here who is LDS would have more info on that. I know my uncle even used the LDS program teaching adult ESL, when he taught it, and he is not LDS. It is free. Dawn PS: I am a certified ESL teacher, but have only taught middle and high school, my guess is that high school curriculum would work in this case, but not sure you want something as academic. We use this textbook for ESL:https://www.amazon.com/Edge-Fundamentals-Student-David-Moore/dp/073626163X . There is also one for Newcomers:http://www.hmhco.com/shop/education-curriculum/english-language-development/access-newcomers Edited August 21, 2016 by DawnM Quote

If you get a chance, could you check on that? My mother-in-law is LDS and she remembers something like that, but can't find it now. The current LDS program, "Daily Dose" emphasizes speaking, and doesn't seem to provide worksheets, as far as I can tell. KarenNC Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 She could check with her local library to see if there is an adult literacy program in her area. If so, they should have age-appropriate materials and recommendations. Quote
