lewelma
My ds and I have been mucking around with philosophy for about a year and would like to make it into a formal course. So far we have read philosophical works by authors including: Borges, Hemingway, Dickinson, Lem, and Dolstoyevski. He has also read Sophie's World and Godel, Escher, and Bach (very interdisciplinary but kind of philosophical). We have read a lot on the internet, but I'm guessing I can't put down 'Crashcourse Philosophy' youtube series on a course description for his application to Harvard  . So I am looking for a *short* survey book and a lecture series. This is not going to be a hardcore class, so I don't want a fat textbook. I'm also not sure ds is all that interested in reading long treatises by original thinkers, but I think he would be willing to read some short essays. Also, we are open to more novels, short stories, poetry, and even some film that we could apply our knowledge to interpreting. We would like to make this a survey course. Ideas? Amateur Actress
The Story of Philosophy by Brian McGee comes to mind. Also, in my college freshman philosophy course, we watched the Woody Allen film, "Crimes and Misdemeanors". ETA: Sorry, his name is spelled Bryan Magee. emzhengjiu
If he's interested in any of the Great Courses, the online streaming service has a couple of philosophy courses. I believe there's still a month's free trial. thegreatcoursesplus.com
