ElizabethB
OK, these are so interesting that I am going to post them here, but you all really need the whole book! page 202, "Chinese adults who can only read traditional Chinese fail on phonemic awareness tests, while those who have also learned the alphabetic Pinyin [phonics based Chinese transcription] writing readily succeed." [From his book Reading in the Brain.] So, I thought there were a few others, I must have not marked them...he basically said that the same thing happens with children, phonemic awareness is not innate and only occurs when you start teaching the phonics of reading or play games with words and letters that teach phonemic awareness. There is also a whole chapter about the dyslexic brain in his book, but the other chapters all have interesting things that could be helpful to understand.

ElizabethB
This book is on its way from my library. Cannot wait!!! I just got the number one today! He feels compelled to mention his evolutionary beliefs often, but the material about the studies is interesting.
