I was one who cringed simply because of what I was taught, and had no valid reason for disliking singular they. The other thread changed my mind. I still dislike using they, their, theirs, and them as a single, gender neutral pronoun, especially, or specifically when it could be unclear whether you mean to specify a single person or multiple people. When you use "you" in the plural sense, you are talking to either one person or more than one person, which means you know how many people you are talking to. I strongly support the use of a plural word in spoken language to distinguish whether the "you" is intended to be plural or singular. For example, "Can you two come here?"
