...................
So we have kind of changed plans ...we were considering a lot of AP classes and testing route to fulfill CA UC requirements but now we plan for ds to do a solid academic 9th and 10th grade year and then take the CHSPe and got to Community College. He is wise, careful making friends but is a very slow, deep methodical type gifted learner. Absorbing material is better than testing and regurgitating in a competitive hurry and flurry. That said, now I can save some money for 9th and 10th grade. He will be enrolled in AOPS Geometry and Pre Calc for those years. And I know I want him to use Apologia Academy for Biology and Chemistry. So, what would you recommend as affordable, at-home courses for Writing/Literature, History, Etc?
regentrude
Making it up yourself. College textbook as a spine (Spielvogel for example), TC lectures from the library or from audible, lots of books from the library or bought inexpensively used.

Mom22ns
My favorite high school writing/literature is Excellence in Lit and it is flat out cheap. The books are almost all public domain, so there is very little cost added to the inexpensive curriculum. Easy to implement, good reading selections, thoughtful writing prompts. katilac
We are using Humanistic Traditions, another college text readily available in inexpensive used copies. It's our spine for ALL the things - history, art, music, literature. It includes lots of art reproductions and literature excerpts. We use some chapters as is, and add to others, for example reading Paradise Lost for English rather than the excerpt in the book.
Guest2
I would echo regentrude. We also added resourses from homeschoolconnections.com recorded classes. They have a strong Catholic worldview, just want to let you know, in case that is not your thing. This is the fun part of high school Imo. You get to share your favorite literature and discuss. SWB talks about this in a few conventions I have attended . Maybe there is an mp3? I did outsource writing though home2teach ( inexpensive at $80 for 6 weeks, daily revisions). This is also a great opportuinity for some favorite electives. The Meyers Psychology bookhttp://www.amazon.com/Exploring-Psychology-David-G-Myers/dp/1429238267/ref=sr_1_15?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1443787654&sr=1-15is a few bucks on Amazon and you can add biofeedback techniques , or stress management, or other psychology related topics that would help your student as they pursue their edcuation. I would try and incorporate study skills, note taking , presentation skills, and time management if needed. Have fun!
Kristie in Florida
I've only been thinking about high school for the last few days, but what Regentrude said is pretty much what we would do if needed. It is pretty much TWTM with the TC lectures added. Perfect.
