Twice Freed (St. John) -- Christian themes

Ides of April (Ray) -- Christian themes; well-written; may appeal more to an older student/adult

Beyond the Desert Gate (Ray) -- sequel -- new setting, new characters, with the protagonist from Ides only marginally on the side

Eagle of the Ninth (Sutcliff) -- Britain under Roman occupation, if that time frame/setting works

The Historical Novels website has nice lists of YA novels written in the past 60 years: Biblical Times and Ancient Middle East; Ancient Rome; Roman Britain

My son is on book 2 of Sutcliff's series.  He is enjoying it.
