LauraBeth475
Something that does a thorough job of teaching logic stage skills like outlining. Preferably something mostly secular and written to the student? What have you liked?
SilverMoon
Well, outlining is generally taught in composition instead of grammar. (I don't remember seeing it in FLL, but I never did see level 4.) Perhaps Hake? It has writing lessons too. Or else do Writing With Skill level 1 and another grammar book like Analytical Grammar, Hake, and such. Mommee & Baba
We did Easy Grammar when we finished FLL until we found IEW and all they had to offer. We've now transitioned into Fix-it! Grammar by the makers of IEW. It's really well done.
LauraBeth475
I'm planning to use WWS, just not sure what grammar to do with it if I don't want to use Rod and Staff.
SnMomof7
CLE includes outlining instructions, and is mainly a grammar program. WWS would include much more outlining practice though. It isn't secular, but it doesn't evangelize either.
waa510
I'll probably catch flak for this, but I think Hake was horribly simplistic. An example asking a kid to circle the verbs with frog and tree being listed as options was ridiculous. My 4 yr old was able to answer the questions. This was 5th grade grammar! I've found no thorough secular grammar. We've reluctantly gone with Rod and Staff which oldest tolerates. She hates the religious bent but admits that she's learned a lot. I like the writing lessons and the way outlining is taught.

SnMomof7
Do you find the Teacher's book needed or just answer keys? At the upper levels (currently 4 and up) the TG doesn't include answers. It does include alternate tests if your child needs a retake. I normally buy both.
monalisa
I thought Saxon (Hake) was great, and am continuing with it for 7th. My dd12 has used it since 5th. I love that it has 2 vocab words every day, solid grammar instruction, and diagramming. We do not use the writing part.
