fdrinca
Summit Academy is opening in our area. Anyone have experience with the homeschool support program?
Ellie
Is that a charter school?
fdrinca
Yes. It's an independent study charter school, of the "here's $1800 to spend" type.
kitten18
I haven't heard of that charter. Do they have other locations already set up? Are they going to have a B&M school or is it all homestudy?
fdrinca
I'm not sure what counties it serves. It's based in Orange County (Newport Beach). I think it's all independent study, although they encourage the creation of parent-led learning centers. http://www.summitacademyca.org/
eight_gregorys
We used a similar type charter when we lived in California. K-8 it was a great experience. Once my oldest hit high school it was a nightmare. So I checked out the link and it was the same kind of deal we had. You get to choose curriculum. I saw the WTM Academy was on the list of vendors. So were Timberdoodle and Rainbow Resource. We ordered lego robotics kits, took classes at the local learning center, took PE classes, etc. EMH sports is what we used and they are statewide. I think it's a great idea to provide materials to your kiddos that you may not be able to otherwise. I have six kiddos and spending $400 on lego kits, is not something I can just do all the time. KWIM? Testing was easy. Two days a year for a couple hours. It was pretty painless for my kids and we didn't do anything to prepare other than our normal deal. We had to submit learning records once a month. Basically, you had to list one learning activity per day. It could be "we did page 40 in our math workbook that covered place value to 100" or something like that. Our contact teachers were great. There are a few hoops to jump through, but nothing I feel is super annoying. Totally worth it for us when we lived in Cali. Lots of education opportunity. SeaConquest
I've not heard of it, but in OC, there is also Sky Mountain Charter (in SD, it is Mountain Peak), which purportedly give a ton of money as well. They might be another to check out. We use Dehesa Charter in SD (they are also in OC). They offer less in Educational Funds, but have cool classes for my little extrovert. If you don't want the classes, then I would grab the most $$$.
CardinalAlt
We're with a similar charter, Sky Mountain, and it's pretty painless, at least k-8. Even the required learning records seem simpler this year. The primary "support" is definitely the funds for classes and materials, though our "partner teacher" (I reject their term, "educational specialist") who we meet with about once a month is very friendly, respectful and as helpful as she can be. fdrinca
Glad to see this came back! This is basically the only "here's your money!" charter school in our county. I should investigate why this is, actually. Every county around us has several options, and I've been jealous for a while. For the early grades, I think it will be a benefit.
