wintermom
Can anyone recommend a good poetry program for students aged 8 - 12. It could include appreciation/recognizing various forms of poems , creating students' own poems, memorizing poems. The program could be DVD and/or book format. Thanks so much! Momof3littles
Any interest in MCT? I think he does this very well. I picked up Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? recently, but haven't gotten to dive into it much yet. http://www.amazon.com/Rose-Where-Did-You-That/dp/0679724710/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407842922&sr=1-1&keywords=rose+where+did+you+get+that+red The Harp and the Laurel Wreath has suggested poems to memorize in different stages. This book has tips on teaching and having kids memorize Shakespeare. http://www.amazon.com/How-Teach-Your-Children-Shakespeare/dp/0307951502/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407842845&sr=1-3&keywords=teaching+shakespeare This little book has some examples of different forms of poetry. http://www.amazon.com/Rhyme-Poetry-Alphabet-Judy-Young/dp/158536519X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407842969&sr=1-1&keywords=r+is+for+rhyme It looks "young" but the content is still appropriate as a supplement for an 8-12 yo IMO. I'm looking for potential programs to use with a small group, so it's really helpful to see you've used this with a group. Thanks!
wintermom
Any interest in MCT? I think he does this very well. I don't know what MCT is. I googled it and got Manitoba Curling Tour! I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant. I didn't know there even was a Manitoba Curling Tour, but I gather curling is big in Manitoba.
RootAnn
Michael Clay Thompson (through Royal Fireworks Press) was what she was referring to. I'm still looking at Grammar of Poetry, but I'll point out that there's also Art of Poetry from Classical Academic Press, too. Not sure either one is exactly what you are looking for. (I know nothing about MCT except what I've read on these boards.)
Sew happily ever after
Putting in another good word for Grammar of Poetry. I also like to use Linguistic Development through poetry memorization for poetry memorization. You can purchase both items through IEW. I also like to use Linguistic Development through poetry memorization for poetry memorization. You can purchase both items through IEW. Do you know if the IEW poetry memorization book has a list of poems included? I only see a couple examples on the website. I have another poetry book with readings on a CD, so I'm not really sure that investing in another set of poems on CD is going to be that much more beneficial. I already have this: A Child's Introduction to Poetry. It's a wonderful selection of poems of all styles and poets. http://www.amazon.com/Childs-Introduction-Poetry-Mountains-Battles/dp/1579122825/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1407876333&sr=1-6&keywords=poetry+for+children
Momof3littles
Do you have a specific title to recommend? I think Music of the Hemispheres is actually quite meaty despite being the lowest level in MCT. That said, for 8-12 yo I'd probably start with Building Poems. Town will cover what was covered in MoH. http://www.rfwp.com/series/poetics-program-by-michael-clay-thompson#book-building-poems

(I know nothing about MCT except what I've read on these boards.) I'm looking for a short poetry appreciation and writing program to use with a small group of homeschool children aged 8 - 12 or so. It will probably be combined with another writing program to help round out their Language Arts/English experience this year. The Art of Poetry book looks awesome, though perhaps just a bit too advanced for my group right now. I'll have to remember it for future use. Momof3littles
Wow! This looks amazing. Thanks for the recommendation. For us, MCT/RFWP materials have been absolutely amazing. One of the absolute best parts of our HSing journey, and my kids have gotten so much out of it, as have I. It isn't a great fit for everyone, but we really love it. I happen to think the poetics portion is really the most impressive piece of his LA curriculum, but they all have wonderful synergy together.
