Heather in the Kootenays
We're done - 4 pigs on their way to the freezer. My quandry was how to deal with the hide if we didn't want to scald them. Well, we skinned them and it worked out well. It took 6 hours but the first one was very slow. After that it went quickly. It would even have been faster if the 3 yo hadn't stepped in a wasp nest bringing the entire proceeding to a complete halt while we comforted her and dealt with the wasps. In true homeschool fashion, the two 13 yo boys plan to use the brain to tan a hide. Won't they be surprised when they read Lord of the Flies this year. And surprise, surprise - we won't be doing it again for a long time. And I'm going to eat a vegetarian meal and go to bed soon.
Remudamom
You know I want pictures. We've tanned hides before. The kids used a book called "Tan your Hide". I bet you're all exhausted. I'll be patient for the pics.
RoughCollie
This stuff fascinates me. If I didn't participate on these boards, I'd lose out on a whole lot of knowledge. RC
Soph the vet
Somehow I missed the "anyone killed a pig?" thread. The answer is yes, I have, but not for butchering! It's usually because the pig is too sick to treat if you know what I mean.
