what type of carpet cleaning?

Our carpets are almost 8 years old and in terrible condition.  When the dog was a puppy, kids let her have accidents on their rooms at night.  Those messes have been cleaned up, but have stained the rug and it smells this time of year.  Plus, there are random stains from who knows what.  I would love to replace the carpet upstairs, but that's not in the budget right now.

So, what is the best cleaning method (to pay for)?  from a truck?  chemicals that are dry right away?

I've always been amazed with the cleaning that the truck cleaners can do.  I have no experience with the chemicals.

I'm married to a guy with OCD and we bought a Bissel home carpet cleaner for around $130.00.  We use it every few months, buy the solution at Sam's for about $6….and it makes such a gigantic difference.

I would go for a truck mounted cleaner.  In the past I've used Stanley Steamer and was always pleased.  I tried Chem Dry once and based on that experience can't recommend it.  Afterwards I couldn't tell that anything at all had been done to our carpet.  Now it wasn't really stained anywhere, but with Stanley Steamer (or when using my own steam cleaner) there is always a nice fresh smell and feeling and the carpet always looks brighter.  You know it's cleaner than it was. With Chem Dry . . . nothing.  It looked and smelled and seemed exactly the same afterwards as it did before.  Maybe my experience was a fluke, but I wouldn't do it again.

I clean it every spring with a carpet cleaner, but that doesn't seem to make much difference.  I have a little green machine to clean as spills/dog accidents happen.

I think I will look into the a truck cleaner.
