Monica_in_Switzerland
Can anyone compare these two vintage anthologies for me? I have read JtBL volume 10 (guide) and very much enjoyed it. But My Book House looks more visually appealing to me, and I like that the volumes appear to be slightly larger in layout and slightly shorter in length, making them more handle-able. Anyone have both sets or is able to compare the actual contents? I am still searching for a TOC for My Book House.
stripe
I have both. I have the older Journeys set and the newer (I think) Bookhouse set. I can give you a TOC of My Bookhouse. (will work on today) In the meanwhile, here is vol 4 from the 1920 edition https://archive.org/details/mybookhouse04mill and several of the volumes have their TOCs listed in this Librivox page https://librivox.org/author/3389 Also http://childrensbooksonline.org/Bookhouse_Volume_1/ That site has both vol 1 and 4 and this lists some of the contents http://www.valerieslivinglibrary.com/mbh.htm

This will get me started! Do you personally have a preference between the two series?
stripe
I just gave up on typing them and scanned them, all but the first volume, whose TOC is five pages long, because the whole thing is short poems Slideshow here. Monica, I can email you a PDF if you'd like. The contents are listed alphabetically, not in page order. I just got the Journeys Through Bookland recently, and it is sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. I've had My Book House for a while, and my daughter reads it on her own. She seems to like it. My copy of Journeys looks very antique and delicate, although it's in good shape, whereas my copy of My Book House looks very new, with a strong spine. My copy is not the really old one; it has white covers and is in 12 volumes. [ETA: It's the 1971 edition.] Last year I found *tons*, *tons* of these old anthologies at my library book sale. I came several weeks in a row and no one else ever bought them, even during a bag sale. I wished I could have bought them for you ladies. I even found some of the older Book House copies. SilverMoon
I like My Book House better for my little girls, currently K and 3rd. Sweet, short stories, aesthetically pleasing to them, and there's something delicious about watching them snuggle up with one. (We have a newer white set.) I'm going to use the index to line up individual stories into their geography next year. DD/3rd also really likes The Children's Hour volumes. Journeys Through Bookland is a better fit for 5th grade DS to just read. The stories appeal to him more. He does have his eye on the one My Book House volume of sailing stories though. justamouse
My Bookhouse I let them read on their own. JtB is something we read together.

I found a set of The Children's Hour at the library and asked my daughter to look through it because no one was looking at it, and she seems to like it, but she does read My Book House quite frequently. It is a very physically inviting set and appeals to her aesthetic with all the fairy tale type illustrations.
Monica_in_Switzerland
Thanks to everyone, especially Stripe! Trying to sum up the differences: MBH looks like good silent reads for elementary (or books to read TO mom), with several adaptations and selections that could lead to bunny trails and complete works. JtBL looks like collections better read aloud, as they appear a bit more complex. The series is appropriate to a higher age range, even if the first books appeal to the younger set as well. There are a greater number of complete works included here. So they are really filling two different niches. My conclusion? I think I will get MBH in print, and just work from my kindle editions of JtBL and freestanding copies of the books included therein. Thanks for helping me work this out!
