Jane in NC
Hi all, In an earlier thread, I mentioned that my 4-H club made assorted beverages which led another poster to PM me for recipes. One in particular that I would like to pass along is the procedure for making root beer which you'll find here. With all of the talk these days of ethanol (ethyl alcohol), your students can learn about the process and have a root beer float when it is all over. Cheers, Jane
Jean in Newcastle
Thank you for posting this. I remember growing up in Japan. All the Americans in our city (about 30 of us!) would get together for the 4th of July. The Mormon missionaries provided home-made root beer (which surprised us since I didn't think they drank soft drinks)!
Tina
Thanks! Sounds like a fun project.
LauraL
This looks like the recipe an uncle of mine used to make. I actually prefer the homemade rootbeer recipe that uses dry ice and not yeast. (I don't like the yeasty smell.) I suspect, Jean, given the alcoholic content from this recipe (negligible, but still there), that your Mormon missionaries in Japan used the dry ice version as well (no fermentation, no alcohol).
