Tsutsie
My son just turned 9. He finished Singapore 6B a while ago and we have given DM 7A a try, but it is to much for him. A big part of it is that he now actually needs to think and sometimes struggle, as well as get things wrong. He is not doing to well with it. I don't want to just give up, but I also don't want to spoil math and our homeschooling experience because of this. I'm thinking about taking a year or so, and doing something else, just to give him time to mature a little. What would you suggest I try? Saxon 8/7? Saxon Algebra 1/2? I'd prefer a spiral approach - as this is meant to be a review of all topic covered thus far. Thanks!
Crimson Wife
Has he done the "Intensive Practice" and "Challenging Word Problems" books from Primary Math? If not, then I'd recommend working through levels 5 & 6.
Tsutsie
Yes, he has done all of it! Not sure if we should just stick with it and take it slow, or if we need to buy a little bit of time. I really think it's developmental, it's not that he is not able to do it - it's just torture - even when he gets almost all the problems correct. Gil
How do you find the format of Discovering Math for a young child? I have 2 little guys Pal just turned 6 and Buddy will be 7 in a little while. They finished 5th grade with Math Mammoth and are plowing through the last of Keys to Measurement. We're polishing off the last of our grade 5 supplements and We're set to start MM6a on Feb 1.
Momling
We liked Galore Park So You Really Want to Learn Maths. We did book 2 and 3 after SM6b. It does start off with review, but moves on to new topics. My daughter never felt it was intimidating or overly tricky. The word problems are much easier than the CWP. Ivey
My oldest son was older when he finished 6B and had no trouble jumping into NEM 1, but Ds15 was only 10 and found it too difficult. We tried a few different things, and ended up spending a year going through the first 2/3 of Jacobs Elementary Algebra and a few chapters of Mathematics: A Human Endeavor. When we came back to NEM 1 at 11, he never had any trouble.
