SS in MD
I'm thinking of using MOH Year 1, but wanted to add in a supplemental Ancient history encyclopedia for more reading. This would be for my older dc in 5th & 7th. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Kissy
I like the Usborne Ancient History encyclopedia. It has lots of pictures and makes it fun.
magistramom
Erm...honestly? Wikipedia, backed up by more formaly referencedl internet sources. My kids get "lost" (inn a good way) linking through all the sublinks on Wikipedia as they learn about the topic du jour.
SS in MD
Kissy, Thanks for the suggestion, do you have the complete title? I couldn't find an Usborne ancient world encyclopedia on amazon. Thanks!
Kissy
The Usborne Internet linked Ancient World. Here is one on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Usborne-Encycolpedia-of-the-Ancient-World-textbook_W0QQitemZ180276289375QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item180276289375&_trkparms=72%3A1073%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&timeout=1218599533453 There are others that look different they are not internet linked. I really like the links and that my child can go and see more information on the stuff they are interested in. The links are preapproved so they are child friendly. :) Btw it does teach evolution just an fyi.
SS in MD
Kissy, Thanks for the link, now I know which one you're referring to. Also, I noticed you're using BF ancient history. How do you like it? We're starting up our 4 year cycle again and dc have read all the SOTW volumes, so I was leaning towards MOH 1, but have never really considered BF. How is it going? Thanks! Lori D.
Mostly 2 page spreads per country or time period; lots of illustrations and sidebars; less text; geared for gr. 4-8. Both are now out of print, but you might be able to find one used. - The Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World: from the Ice Age to the Fall of Rome (Hazel Martel) This is the edition I have: http://www.amazon.com/Kingfisher-Book-Ancient-World-Fall/dp/0613137922/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218648228&sr=8-3 Here is a more recent edition so you can see sample pages: http://www.amazon.com/Kingfisher-Book-Ancient-World-Fall/dp/0753453975/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218648228&sr=8-1 - World History Encyclopedia (Ganeri, Martell, Williams) Subtitled: 4 million years ago to the present day. Here's a more recent updated version with a very nice timeline feature across the bottom of each page: http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-World-History-Childrens-Reference/dp/1405417021/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218654299&sr=1-4 We haven't used it, but the Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia of the Ancient World may fit your family. We've used some of their science internet linked books and they're pretty good. http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Internet-linked-Encyclopedia-Ancient-Internet/dp/0746069448/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218654630&sr=8-
Melissa in Australia
Fammily Encyclopedia of World History, by Readers Digest. it has a lot more information than other books. I also like Children's Britannica. it is written very clearly, not overly simple, but not overly complex
