cseitter
Is there a good non-expensive curriculum out there that teaches study skills for high schoolers? I know about The Teaching Company's DVD's but they are to expensive and my library doesn't have them. Thanks in advance Cindy
Candid
Cal Newport is one of my favorite people on study skills and time management issues. He has a blog: http://calnewport.com/blog/ You'll need to explore the blog to find posts that are appropriate for the topic, but they are there. He also has books: http://www.amazon.com/High-School-Superstar-Revolutionary-ebook/dp/B0036S4BT4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1378298678&sr=8-5&keywords=cal+newport http://www.amazon.com/Become-Straight--Student-Unconventional-ebook/dp/B000MAHBYQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1378298678&sr=8-3&keywords=cal+newport
Candid
Also, a great webinar from one of our forum members: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/301106-time-management/?do=findComment&comment=3030154 Note to Pam if she is reading: I'd love you to make this available somewhere as a download. It has stayed up a long time, but I'd love to have my own copy, preserved on my computer for the future.
SilverMoon
FWIW, I've found inexpensive, like new TC courses on Amazon's used/new section. :001_smile:
Running the race
I've been meaning to use this with my 17yo. It is a series of videos with handouts, and it's free! www.lbcc.edu/LAR/studyskills.cfm
Pegasus
Do you have inexpensive dual enrollment opportunities where you live? We had DD take a study skills class at the CC and it worked out very well. They required the students to seek out the various resources available on campus as part of their assignments. They had to visit the writing center, the library, the testing center, etc. In addition to study skills, they also delved into personality and interest surveys, plotted possible courses of study and career objectives, and had the students make presentations to the class. SailorMom
I bought the Teaching Company's DVDs for $24 on Ebay.... They are, btw, quite good.
Momma H
Try Victus Study Skills, it is excellent. There is a regular teacher led course or a student led one for older kids. I really like it! It wasn't expensive. I think it is new. HTH!
