edeemarie
I am putting together our history for next year and am looking for suggestions on read alouds for the Middle Ages. My oldest will be 10. I don't mind if they are either nonfiction or historical fiction. These are only books that I would read to them so the reading level isn't as important as whether or not the book will hold their attention. Have any suggestions? Thanks:)
SilverMoon
King Arthur! (Roger Lancelyn Green) or Sword in the Stone (T.H. White) Robin Hood (also Green) Beowulf (Rebsamen) Norse mythology (D'Aulaire's Norse Gods and Giants, Book of Trolls, Book of Norse Myths) Dangerous Journey (Pilgrim's Progress for kids) Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow (Allen French) Lamb's Shakespeare retellings Hobbit by Tolkien is a great fit for medieval times too

Zoo Keeper
The Hobbit The Door in the Wall Adam of the Road Beowulf (Nye) and my family loved this picture book version (which has nice prose, too) my oldest *loved* reading Favorite Medieval Tales on his own Dangerous Journey (I like this better than Little Pilgrim's Progress--so did my kids; my oldest felt that the writing in LPP was too simple because he had read Dangerous Journey first.) the Diane Stanley bios-- DaVinci, Good Queen Bess, Bard of Avon, Peter the Great Castle Diary (Platt) St. George and the Dragon (M. Hodges, T.S. Hyman, illus. LOVELY pictures.) ETA: few more... Stories from Don Quixote (Baldwin) Arabian Nights (Lang)
