Embassy
I have a 5 year old who wants to sew clothes. I know how to sew, but I don't enjoy it so she hasn't really been around it at all. I looked into beginning kits and I think she would prefer to do her own thing. She is a creative-type and makes "elaborate" paper clothes and costumes and tapes them on. I was thinking of getting her some felt or fleece fabric for her to cut and then punching holes in the fabric and letting her sew with yarn with one of those plastic needles. If you think this would work, what could I use to punch a hole in the fabric? If not, what else would you recommend?

CupOCoffee
My DD takes old clothes that no longer fit, or that have rips in them, and cuts them up to make things. At 5, if you think she can handle the needle and scissors, let her have at it. You say she already makes clothes and stuff with paper and tapes them together; I would guess then that she wouldn't need a pattern to do this with scraps of cloth! She sounds very creative! ~coffee~
Eagle
My 5yo uses a metal tapestry needle that is fairly sharp. We use the book "Sewing School" for instruction and ideas. http://www.amazon.com/Sewing-School-Projects-Kids-Will/dp/1603425780/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370806099&sr=8-1&keywords=Sewing+school
