Is there something similar to the Story of Western Civilization reading workbooks but for science?

My DS enjoys using the SOWC worktexts alongside our history spine of SOTW. Is there a similar reading workbook-style program for science?

They go along with the regular Holt California middle school science textbooks, but I think you could use them with any textbook or science encyclopedia.
