We like

The Encyclopedia of Earth A Complete Visual Guide (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0520254716)

Earth Science 9th Edition by Tarbuck, Lutgens (http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_tarbuck_escience_9/)

ETA:

We also like the videos on Nova Science Now online.

My boys also collected rocks from beaches and parks. They bought some too from the tech museum gift store.

We have a small digital handheld microscope.
