What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

Just wondering if anyone has any awesome ideas for learning and doing crafts for Thanksgiving. I was thinking about taking next week off of formal history, WWE, etc, and just do fun stuff for the holiday since I'm only doing three days of school next week. I thought it would be fun to teach my older daughter a little of the history behind the holiday, since we won't really be studying that for a couple years in our history book.

I have 4 and 7 year old daughters, plus my 4 year old niece will probably be here those days, too. I'm sure we'll at least do some handprint turkeys - can't resist another hand craft for the memory box! :D

My oldest is going to read Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims. I checked out another book from the library, The First Thanksgiving, to read aloud. We will use some of the material from Scholastic that someone linked to in another thread. We are only doing school 2 days (Monday and Wednesday). Tuesday dh is having some tests run, so the boys will be with my mom. I will ask her if she wants me to send some work to keep them busy or not. My oldest will also do some math next week.

We've cleaned out the library of Thanksgiving storybooks. :p (You snooze, you lose...)

We'll do a few coloring sheets:

And this is cute:

And now I'll be forced to make those oreo turkeys.... oh darn. :D

This week and next, all of our read-alouds and book basket selections are Thanksgiving-themed from this list.

We'll also be doing some (but not all) of these crafts.

I've chosen seven topics for our Thanksgiving unit: Native Americans, the Mayflower voyage, Pilgrims, the first Thanksgiving, Civil War era Thanksgivings, modern day Thanksgivings, and Thanksgiving fun. We'll be reading different books and doing different activities for each of these themes. That's enough school to last this week, plus next Monday and Tuesday...next Wednesday will be a "practical application" day of cleaning and cooking!

These are all great ideas!

We've been doing some renovations to our house (trying to get done BEFORE Thanksgiving! :tongue_smilie:), so I totally forgot to hit up the library for some books. When I got there today, they were completely gone!

I do have one book that I love to read, and my kids make me read it over, and over, and over again: http://www.amazon.com/The-Ugly-Pumpkin-Dave-Horowitz/dp/0142411450/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352845331&sr=8-1&keywords=the+ugly+pumpkin. It looks like a Halloween book, but it's actually about a "pumpkin" who gets overlooked for Halloween and finds real friends on Thanksgiving.

Thanks for all the awesome ideas!
