MusicMouseTN
I have no idea how to sew. Oh I can put a button back on, and hand stitch a hem if I have to, but beyond that - nothing! My dd really wants to learn to sew, and so do I. My mil gave me a basic sewing machine but I have no idea what to do with it. I think I'd like to give dd some basic sewing stuff for Christmas so we could start the year off learning how to sew together. Thoughts? What do we need? Where do I start? Thanks for your advice. I'm truly clueless about this.
PeterPan
Find a friend to teach you? :D Seriously, if you've got someone who will help you, that's one way. When I took back up sewing, it had been years. I got a reference book and just took the plunge. That way works. Or there are plenty of sewing with kid books you can get and work through together. Remember, if you get stuck on something, you just google and you'll probably find a video. Pick something simple you WANT to do together, and you'll be able to figure it out. :)
Lab1
What do you want to make? The Kwik Sew books are perfect for learning to sew clothes. The patterns are a little boxy, but the instructions are great with lots of visuals. I learned the basics of clothing construction with the books. For quilting I love the Quilt in a Day books. Don't be fooled into thinking you will have a quilt after a Saturday. It's more like a quilt top in 24 hrs of sewing. Still the techniques are great and you end up with a beautiful quilt! You will want a rotary cutter, mat and ruler for quilting. They are great for clothing too!
FairProspects
Finding a friend is the best way, but if you don't know anyone who sews, I'd look up the JoAnns and quilt shops in the area. Many have sewing circles /clubs or classes and signing up for classes together is a great way to meet others who are interested in the hobby and learn a lot. There are actually quite a lot of sewing classes once you start looking for them!
