Angie in VA
To qualify for National Merit, the PSAT counts in 11th grade. The benefit of taking it earlier is practice.
mamajudy
My kids all took the PSAT beginning in 9th grade for practice. Since they were home schooled since kindergarten, it was a good chance to take a test in a classroom setting, was inexpensive, and gave us an idea of what their scores would be, what areas needed attention, etc.
cshell
It is not necessary, but it is really great practice. ;) We have our kiddos take it in 9th 10th & 11th! It only counts officially in 11th.
dbmamaz
Because i dont live in a state that has umbrella schools, I just read "I got a notice from my umbrella that said . . . " three times, trying to picture if the umbrella had a radio attached, or someone had left a note in it when they folded it up, and finally realized what you meant :tongue_smilie:

Harriet Vane
As the others said, it's great practice. Considering how much scholarship money could potentially ride on the 11th grade PSAT, it's well worth it to get more familiarity with the test.
