elegantlion
I'm using the term adapted classical to describe what our schooling currently looks like. Our electives this year are: Japanese (1.0 credit - part of a three year program) Introductory Russian (.5 credit to see how far he wants to go with this) Drawing (.5 using Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain) Philosophy (1.0 credit using Theory of Knowledge, and reading Plato and Aristotle later in the year)
Jenny in Florida
can we talk about what you are using for your non core subjects (ex: history, geography, electives, etc...) i'd love to hear new ideas!!! :grouphug: My son is doing Modern American History this coming year (1865 - present). He's using the U.S. History course here http://www.hippocampus.org/ along with some of the films from this book http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/american-history-on-the-screen-wendy-s-wilson/1111862883?ean=9780825144516 and 20 or so more films for which I'm writing my own lessons. He'll read the books on which five of the films are based. And I'm adapting basic structure and project ideas from the Hewitt honors syllabus. He's also doing American Government in the fall, using this text http://search.barnesandnoble.com/American-Government/Karen-OConnor/e/9780321317100 and the Idiot's Guide, along with selections from this book http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Debating-Democracy/Bruce-Miroff/e/9780495913474?itm=1&usri=debating+democracy+bruce+miroff. He'll also write current event reports and play with the www.icivics.org site. For electives, he's doing creative writing in the fall. The plan is for him to participate in the NaNoWriMo Young Writers' Program and use the workbook and materials from that site. We're spreading a half credit each of music and art history, both focused on American artists, over the full year. For music, we're using selections from this text my daughter brought home from college: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Listen-to-This/Mark-Evan-Bonds/e/9780131838253?itm=3&usri=listen+to+this along with some lesson plans I found online and some stuff I'm cobbling together myself. For art, he'll read appropriate sections from The Annotated Mona Lisa, watch some of the art history videos from Khan Academy and do several museum field trips. Second semester electives will be kitchen science and intro to programming, both using MIT open courseware materials as the base.
