Writing Program with Visuals/Flow Charts

I am going to attempt to begin teaching my ds (entering 4th but on the immature side due to VSL) writing. I need something that is very visual, flow charts or some type of "charts" to show the progression through the steps (as you can see from my weak description that even I am struggling on figuring out what I really need to make this first step into the writing process a success). Would WriteShop Primary be what I'm looking for? Writing Tales? Other ideas? He easily tires from writing so I imagine I'll have to scribe for awhile. Grammar included is fine but not a game changer.

Step up to Writing fits that description perfectly. We've been having discussions about it on the SN board under "Who has used Susan's writing program with a dyslexic". I haven't used this program yet so I can't speak to how it will go long term, but I'm very excited about the possibilities. I can see how it will really scaffold writing for my ds and make it incredibly visual.

I wonder if The Power of Pictures could fit the bill for your kiddo. Caveat: I haven't used it, though I just ordered it to use in the fall for my very visual, right-brained ds who is super creative but for whom writing is really difficult.

Here's the Amazon link:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Power-Pictures-Creating-Jossey-Bass/dp/078799667X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343235759&sr=8-1&keywords=power+of+pictures

I found it from a thread here a few days ago, and I plan to use it in the fall combined with the writer's workshop concept from Jennifer Jacobson's "No More I'm Done" book.

It sounds like she walks kids through a simple collage or paint-based art piece. Then they use the piece as inspiration during writing time. Since coming up with a topic to write on is a challenge for ds, I think this could work really well.

I highly recommend "Teaching Writing to Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic Learners" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1412925207/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01

I have a VSL, too and I am struggling how to implement writing. Also, the "No More, I am done" book looks promising for me, too.

Also, when teaching grammer, check out MCT http://www.rfwp.com/pages/michael-clay-thompson/ . I am going to use this with doing things like this --Language Lively Lessons http://ebeth.typepad.com/serendipity/lively_language_lessons/index.html

All wonderful stuff to be used with VSl learners, gathered from infinite sources around here :D

Just followed the link to "The Power of Pictures"! Thank you! It's in my Amazon cart

Glad you thought that looks good, though the OP on the other thread gets all of the credit. I'd never heard of it until two days ago. Mine should be here tomorrow (yay, Amazon Prime!) and I'm looking forwarding to getting the rest of the year's writing workshops planned out.

Love the ideas! Thank you. Does anyone know what I'd need to order from MCT? Or should I start with Sentence Family?

I am NOT the expert here (I grabbed a copy of MCT's Island series used but am waiting until fourth grade to use it), but I've heard a bunch of people say they did The Sentence Family before starting the Island series and were glad they did. I found The Sentence Family used this summer and plan to use it this year. But that's just my $0.02 :001_smile:.

I think for MCT that people say you will be fine with the basic HS package on their Web site--you don't need the student books for every item b/c you can share the TM to read through.

If I could do it again, I would do Sentence Family and then do MCT Island. But since I bought MCT Island, my ds is going into 4th Grade this year, I really like the look of it AND I would do MCt Island with the way Sentence island OR Lively Language does it for exercises.

I would incorporate those exercies if I was teaching MCT Island and parts of speech, taking breaks and drawing the parts of speech. So, you could skip Sentence Family and just draw the parts of speech like Lively Langauge Lessons as you go along MCT Island OR just do Sentence Family and then go straight to MCT Island.
