Courtney in Va
My 12yo daughter is interested in becoming more informed regarding current events. She has used Time for Kids for a couple of years, but I would like to find a news source that has more depth (but with minimal "smut" news). What do you use for your adolescents? yslek
I subscribe to the Economist, and B & T will sometimes pick it up and read articles. It is a publication for adults, so there may be the occasional article on a non-kid-friendly topic, but the focus is on international news and economics rather than smut. :) It's not cheap to subscribe, but you can save a substantial amount by getting an academic subscribtion. abbeyej
Well, for kids who aren't quite ready to read adult newsmagazines and such, Upfront (from Scholastic and NYT) is really pretty good. It's short and comes weekly during the school year. But good summaries of current events sometimes with discussion (what are the sides of this debate? why would someone take this position vs that?) and a little mix of age-oriented interest pieces. I particularly like that the back cover always has editorial cartoons, and sometimes these are keyed to articles within the magazine, so you can discuss the artist's commentary in relation to recent news. I think a home subscription runs about $20 for the year (it's more than the prices mentioned on the website because those are for bulk orders) and I found it well worth that. (I also like the Art magazine that Scholastic also puts out for high schoolers.) http://classroommagazines-stage.scholastic.com/products/the-new-york-times-upfront?promo_code=3791

Heather in WI
My 12 yo reads the front section (section A) of The Wall Street Journal. No smut and straight news. We've had great conversations about world events. :)
