southeast new mexico at thanksgiving...

Recommended Posts

We may have a chance to be in southeast NM at Thanksgiving. Is this worth doing. I know nothing of this area.

Should we go north of west. Where would you stay? What would you do?

Will you be close to the Sacramento mountins? If so, Ruidoso, NM is beautiful and is a quant little town full of fun shops unique to that area. There are tons of cabins and bed/breakfast places. If the weather cooperates, you could go snow skiing at Ski Apache; very fun.

Your DS is coming to school here, right?

Honestly, there is little to do here - and the few tourist activities are a considerable drive from one another. Ruidoso is about 80mi from Roswell. Carlsbad Caverns is 80mi in another direction. And that's it for about 200 miles in any direction.

Roswell itself has a mediocre alien museum made entirely of enlarged newspaper clippings. Nothing you can't read on the internet at home. Since the govt confiscated everything at the crash site, there is nothing to display. We have a very small art museum and a small historical society museum as well. And that's pretty much it.

I've been here 2yrs and am finally content, but I would never travel here for a vacation. It's a nice place to live (if you have a good job), but I wouldn't want to visit. Your son may want to share his new town with you though, so that's a consideration.

Feel free to PM me with any questions. I almost messaged you a week or so ago myself. If your DS needs anything, don't hesitate to let me know. We will be happy to help.

We have family in Deming, NM. We go there every Christmas.

If you were staying over Christmas and New Year's, I'd recommend the Sun Bowl in El Paso. We love attending that one and then stop off at a restaurant in Las Cruces on the way home.

Old Town Mesilla in Las Cruces is pretty. You have to experience a real tamale, for example. We ate at the Double Eagle and they are right about it being haunted. Hubby and I were eating in the main room (no one else in the room with us) when we had a "visitor". Never knew of the place's history. Without skipping a beat, hubby deadpans to the waitress, "Do you have a female ghost in this place?" He described her and the waitress smiled and said yes. We both giggled and continued with our meal and had a great time. Later we read the story of the 2 ghosts in that place.

Ruidoso is great for a trip to ski and the B&Bs are nice. Mescalero Apache Reservation has a nice casino/hotel outside of Ruidoso to stay also. White Sands or Alamogordo's Museum can be done. What about Carlsbad Caverns?

I'm assuming he's at NMMI? Um...Carlsbad for the caverns, or White Sands/Alamogordo are the first that come to mind. You could also try Cloudcroft. We stayed there one weekend as a get away in a really neat old hotel that was haunted. We would also go to Ruidoso - it's a nice change of climate/scenery from Roswell. Though Roswell is bigger than when I was there...which probably isn't saying too much. :)

I love Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. Lots of great little cabins. :)

White Sands is wonderful, as is Carlsbad.

All of these, though, are quite a distance apart. Lots of driving, though I never minded... I love NM, and love road trips. :auto: What you decide to do might need to depend on the amount of time you have to spend in the area, and how much of it you want to spend on the road.
