Arkansas -- What's neat to see & do in NE Arkansas?

Recommended Posts

We may try to take 2-3 days for some family time and haven't been to Arkansas. I've heard of the State Park with diamonds and Hot Springs. Where are those located?

I have these websites which look really neat, but it would take me forever to go through them. We're looking for inexpensive things for a family with kids ages 9-19. Camping cabins or a Christian retreat center would probably be our overnight options. (Or Choice Hotels with the HSLDA discount).

Please take a look and see what you think of the ideas at these links or any other possibilities that you know about. Thanks!!!

Gosh, isn't anyone going to recommend anything?

Are the Hot Springs neat for kids or not?

We took our older kids to Hot Springs when they were little. It was okay. We walked around the shops in town, toured the museum, stuff like that. We went to a passion play in the Hot Springs area that was very good. It was not the Eureka Springs play (we have been there too, and the giant Jesus statue creeps me out, but you did not ask about that did you?), it was smaller but well done.

We spent a lot of time in the natural areas around Hot Springs. I was younger then and still liked nature. Now I like nice hotels.

Hot Springs is southwest of Little Rock (which is in the center of the state). Crater of Diamonds State Park is southwest of Hot Springs. We had friends who went there just last week, and all their dc found quartz. A pretty good-sized diamond was found the day they were there, but not by them.

Are you set on NE Arkansas, or could you come to central Arkansas or another part of the state? And it sounds like you prefer camping, hiking, natural sort of things. Do you want a lake or river close by? Do you prefer mountains or flatter areas?

I'll pm you a little later with some ideas after you've had time to give a few more specifics.

ETA: Would you like to go canoeing? And what about restaurants? Do you want a wide variety to choose from, or does that not matter so much?

LOL! Actually, I prefer nice hotels, too, Kelli, but finances dictate... :o(

We'll be in the St. Louis area at this point and have only 2-3 days to get away as a family before taking ds to college. After moving, we may just need to stay put. Arkansas just looks so close and we haven't explored it at all! Maybe we should save it for next summer.

Mountains, rivers, canoeing, restaurants... it doesn't matter. We're just looking for cheap (reality, gals) and something fun to do together as a family. It seems like camping and Taco Bell are what we usually end up with and just as long as we're together that's what matters.

Thanks for your help and say a prayer for me as I'm drowning in boxes and books and stress, preparing for a move (and major downsizing)...
