trishalinn
A local homeschool group is asking me to teach a weekly biology class for high schoolers including a lab. I have a degree in biology, so this would probably be a lot of fun. But I have four young children, including twin babies, so I am pretty busy and not real in touch with high school level curriculum. Do you have any suggestions for a good high school biology? I'm particularly interested in curriculum with good teacher resources to make my job easier and streamline everything. Lizzie in Ma
I can't imagine how one could do hs biology once a week. We do biology daily but do our weekly labs with a group of kids. That works out great and pretty much lines up with the different courses everyone is using. Perhaps that would work?
trishalinn
I probably didn't explain clearly. There would be a weekly lecture and lab with assignments the students would complete throughout the week. It would be weekly in that we will only be meeting once a week. Miselainia
Here are links to some open course wares that have already been put together for biology that you can use or just get ideas from: AP Biology: http://courses.moodleshare.com/course/view.php?id=51 Cell Reproduction: http://courses.moodleshare.com/course/view.php?id=122 From Open High School of Utah (2 semesters): http://courses.moodleshare.com/course/view.php?id=178 http://courses.moodleshare.com/course/view.php?id=171 My son attended OHSU this year and I was amazed at how many good, free online resources there were. Mommyfaithe
I just ordered the Oak Meadow Biology syllabus($20.00)...with the Holt Biology text from amazon ($5.00!!!). The text is very visually appealing, which is very important to dd. The syllabus includes lists of materials for home labs, assignments and a weekly schedule. It looks very easy to implement...so I can actually spend time teaching, rather than figuring out the course schedule.
SailorMom
I highly recommend Miller Levine Biology, with some adjustments for labs depending on the equipment you have available. It is an outstanding book. DS and I are close to finishing it up. I originally thought I'd sell the books when he was done, but I think I'll keep them as a reference and a source for his Advanced Bio class later in high school. One great thing - used copies are everywhere and relatively cheap. The teacher's copy was about $35, but DS's text was only maybe $7. TiaTia
Holt Biology (polar bear or cheetah) textbooks are inexpensive used, and very well supported with a variety of publisher materials and answer keys. The teacher's "One Stop Planner" CD is a fabulous thing: if you don't have time to create materials for this class (babies!), you will love the fact that the Chapter Resources include assessments at three different levels (and in Spanish), and various other goodies, including labs of various kinds (inquiry, math, demo). There's even a cute tool in the cheetah version that will generate a lab supply list for you, when you input which labs, how many students, and how many lab teams. Having said all that, the Miller-Levine (macaw) looks fabulous, too -- and also has options for different academic levels.
trishalinn
Great! Thanks for the ideas. This gives me a place to start looking. It is a Christian group, so texts from Christian publishers would be considered as well.
