Logic of English (grammar ?)

I am planning to use Logic of English next year with my then 5th grader. He has used Rod & Staff English 3 this year for 4th grade and will finish it up in a month or so. He is a strong reader but lacks confidence with his spelling skills and that is reflected in his hesitancy to write anything original.

Could we take a break from Rod & Staff English while doing LOE? I know LOE includes some grammar but I'm wondering if it is enough to replace R&S (would be 4 if we continued it) for 5th grade.

Thanks for any help!

You can compare the scope and sequence of the LoE grammar with that of R&S 4.

LoE has 2 pages of basic grammar per lesson. The depth of coverage looks like it is suitable for a 7-8 yo.

I have R&S 4 and each part of speech and sentence type is covered much more in-depth. It also teaches diagramming.

At the same time, it will not hurt to take a few months off grammar while you focus on spelling. You can speed through LoE at your son's pace and start R&S 4 after you are done with LoE.

Hope that helps.

I was considering using LOE with my 7th grader for spelling. I was wondering about the grammar also, but I came to the conclusion from looking at the website that the grammar is very basic. I'm still undecided about using it for spelling, but I would definitely supplement the grammar or follow a plan like the above posters mentioned if I decided to use it.
