yvonne
Are they like garlic that you pull apart into cloves? And one clove-like thing = "one shallot"? Or is "one shallot" the whole unit that might have two clove-like things in it when you peel off the dry papery stuff? (Yeah, every day in the kitchen is a new adventure for me. ) Thanks! Mrs Mungo
One shallot=the whole thing, just like an onion.
yvonne
Thank you! Off to mince....
NASDAQ
Shallots are just that one small onion-thing. Sometimes they come apart into two, but include both.
Farrar
Dh refers to shallots as "onion candy." Which is a bit off topic, but amuses me.
Cosmos
One shallot is less of a pain in the butt to peel and mince than five or six, but still plenty annoying. But so delicious.
OrganicAnn
A shallot is also milder than an onion so if you are using onions, I would go with less. You can usually find them in grocery stores, but you may have to ask where they are. They are often with other strange little things like fresh ginger or herbs. They are often about golf ball sized.
