With all the BA talk, I went looking at the AOPS site...

Art of Problem Solving Pre-Algerbra and beyond?

 

Or the programs they recommend - Creative Problems Solving in School Mathematics by George Lenchner and Kitchen Table Math by Chris Wright?

I really like the Kitchen Table Math book. It is a book for the parent to read (not workbooks for the kids).

It's probably a better question to ask on the logic and high school boards, or the accelerated learner board. As a general rule, grammar stage students aren't ready for most of the AoPS books.

:iagree: There have been a lot of AoPS threads on the Logic, High School and Accelerated boards. (here's a search) They are unique and quite challenging.

The KTM books are *great* teaching tools. They show how to explain things, conceptually, so kids really get the why behind the math. If you are using a strong conceptual math program (like MM) this might be a little bit redundant, but I still find it really helpful.

We have been using AoPS since Intro to Algebra (the prealgebra book did not exist when my kids needed it). We used this in 7th (DD) and 6th (DS) grades and are very happy.

Thanks for the information. I don't think I'd even heard of AoPS. But I liked what he had to say in that lecture that was posted this morning. Thanks for the list of threads. I'll go look there next.

 

So with the Kitchen table books, would they add anything to Miquon?
